Concepts

Propaganda

My concepts class and a couple other students held an art show in the Driscol gallery on November 5^th. The theme of the show was propaganda. Propaganda can be defined as information that is spread and shared that is supposed to promote a cause. Propaganda influences people everyday.

The gallery was held in a relatively small room. The lighting came out much better than what I expected, and each of the participating students did an incredible job especially due to the time constraints and space provided. The first thing that people would have seen was a line of bright orange street cones on the outside of the gallery. I believe that this was a very important factor for the gallery as a whole because it seemed to “invite the viewer in”. Once people had walked through the doors of the gallery the next thing they would have noticed was a large white fence built with snowboards. This was on of my favorite pieces of the gallery. This piece was exceptionally captivating because of its placement and bright white color. The artist statement was not attached and the viewer was forced to come up with conclusions on their own based on what they saw. The title of the piece was “fun?”. I knew the artist, however I did not know what the piece was supposed to encompass. To me it seemed as though it was trying to portray that although snowboarding is meant to be a “fun” activity, that people get more caught up in what snowboards they are using, the gear they use and what colors they are wearing rather than the activity itself. The blank white color of the snowboards suggests that it doesn’t really matter what brand it is, they are all still used for the same purpose. The craftpersonship on the piece was done very well, and looked as though it took quite a lot of time. Since I was apart of the show I realized we only had about a week to complete our pieces and it made the snowboard fence even more impressive to me.

Another piece that was very interesting was the piece about money. A student had placed multiple stacks of money in different parts of the room. The viewers were allowed to take the money. It was so interesting to see that all of the money really did get taken. It was also interesting to see/hear what people said about it. I must admit that I definitely thought about taking some of the money, but I second guessed myself and left it. I felt guilty for taking something I knew was meant to be art. (Especially because I knew who the artist was). This piece showed the greed and temptation that people feel almost everyday. The piece definitely got its point across and I enjoyed watching people react to it.

I enjoyed the gallery and I enjoyed being apart of it. It was very fun to be the producer instead of a viewer. I liked seeing people’s reactions to pieces and being able to see people examining my own work.

My initial idea for my project was to show the effects of global warming on my home town; Park City, Utah (and therefore how it would affect me). It’s a ski town and it is vital for us to have good snowfall every year so tourists and locals can ski/snowboard. I have grown up skiing in Park City and I would be devastated if I couldn’t anymore because of loss of snow. Because of global warming, the amount of snowfall is decreasing. I showed a young girl, portraying myself, who grows up skiing and as time gradually goes on, the snow decreases more and more. I show her as an adult and the snow is almost totally gone. My last scene shows Park City as a desert with nothing but dirt and a few trees. If we keep on adding to the effects of global warming by driving cars and polluting, this story may become a sad reality in the future. :( The music I chose for this piece was a simple, repetitive beat. It was happy music, however I think it also had a gloomy down beat. I liked the irony of the happiness of the music to the sadness of the actual story going on.

I have never worked with flash before this class. It has taken me a lot of time, however I am very happy with the product of my project thus far. I am working on details of the project in imovie and working on transitions and sounds. I will have an example of one of my scenes up soon.

Plus Gallery

I had never been to the plus + gallery before. I went to the opening of the new exhibition on October 22^nd. The plus + gallery is a contemporary art gallery that is full of different and unique pieces. It was extremely interesting and very different to what you would see at the Denver Art Museum.

The new exhibit is called “This too shall pass” by Jenny Morgan. I wasn’t familiar with Morgan’s work when I entered the gallery. I just saw the opening advertised and I decided to go take part. I am extremely glad that I ended up going to this opening. Jenny Morgan was originally from Salt Lake City, Utah. She did her initial art training for college in Colorado, and continued art classes in Utah. She has done exhibits in multiple places and states including New York, however most of her exhibits have been in Colorado.

Her exhibit called “This too shall pass” was absolutely incredible. From a distance, it would be easy to think that her paintings were actually photographs. Each piece was so detailed and extremely accurate to the human face and body. Before I read about the piece, I wasn’t sure of the point or content, I just thought that they were beautiful pieces done with some sort of red connection. Each piece was an extremely detailed portrait, however there was a part of the person that was red. My favorite piece was called “Old Soul” and it showed a half naked woman, completely humanistic, except for her hair that was the wild red color that she used in a different way in each piece. The contrast between the realism of the figure and the fake look of the hair made this piece stand out so much to me. I wanted to do more research on WHY she used the red. Plus + gallery’s website said that “Deconstructing the Figure,” as termed by Morgan, involves a process of coming to completion with the painting then gradually excavating the surface to disclose partial areas of the bright red under-painting.” (plusgallery.com)

At a closer look, the people in each of her paintings were people she knew from Denver. After I knew this, it seemed more personal. She knew each of these people that she had painted, which makes me think she spent more time getting details and important things in to create that sense of personality. Also, it makes the viewer wonder how she knows each person. What kind of a connection did she have with each person? Were they friends? Fellow artists? I did further research and found that she did have a very personal relationship with each and showing that was one of her main points and ideas in each piece. I would recommend anyone going to see this exhibit not only because her work is simply amazing, but also because the message of connection between the artist and his/her work is also important and very apparent throughout her work.

I did the first draft very simple… I wanted to get my story across. However, after working on it I decided to change my story. I am going to start with a young me snowboarding. I am going to progress through age, and change the colors from bright to dark and darker, and have the snow melting and my face changing from happy-go-lucky to sad. (because of the loss of snow). At the very end I am going to show Park City, my ski resort home, as a desert.

My project was designed with as maximum range in the size of text as possible. This project was based around identity and self. The words, sentences, and song lyrics I chose are either extremely important to me, or have been highly influential in my life recently. I chose to do the words LOVE, PAIN, DREAM, ADVENTURE, STRONG, LIVE, and COASTIN. The song lyrics are longer, however they directly correlate in my life. This piece was centered very much around my personal feelings and strong emotions with past experiences. I chose to do an up close picture of my face because I believe that people directly associate people’s faces with their personalities. I tend to be a very happy person so I chose a picture that shows me in that sense. However, some of the words aren’t positive, but this is showing that people cannot be happy 100% of the time. I purposely chose to do the shade of red because it is a very bold color, and corresponds with my personality.
